August 7th update from Stephen, Karen's husband

A lot of people have been asking me what's the latest with Karen, so here it is:
Last post I did was mid-June, we were in St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica. A week later, everything the hospital could do for Karen had been done; bacterial infections & anemia handled, heart & lungs working - everything but the cancer itself.  By the way, props to St John's, a top notch hospital with a great staff of doctor's and nurses.
Karen's health continued to deteriorate at an alarming pace. She became bed-bound: the spreading cancer having eaten away part of a vertebra and nerves in her lower back. Her left leg stopped functioning.  We could not go to Europe as we had hoped. It would have been almost impossible to travel to the airport.  So we brought alternative treatments to her bedside.  Hardly as effective as doing a full treatment in a clinic, but I firmly believe that these treatments have been keeping her alive.  I can't tell you how many times doctors and nurses have pulled me aside and told me that I better start hospice, as she was about to die.  One doctor told me that he thought that Karen had only 24 hours to live when she arrive at St. Johns June 3rd, and yet here she is alive two months later.
The kind people at the Motion Picture Television Fund helped place her in a nursing facility, where she is now.  The cancer is still spreading slowly and it takes its toll.
I have given up predicting what is going to happen to Karen.  In June family members flew in fearing the worse, but Karen is still here.  You look at the scans, they tell you one thing, then you meet Karen, and what you are left with is how amazingly alive she is. Maybe it's her belief system, maybe it's because she was never one to tune out with drugs in her life, but mostly it's her innate character. She can't help but take life head-on and be completely engaged in the moment, always interested, always curious, always present.
My daughter and I have both stopped working so that we can be by her side and we have hired someone to help as well. Thanks to your generous support through this process we can be there for her all the time.  We are supplementing traditional medicine with all the alternative care we can afford.  This would not have been possible without your generosity.
As a filmmaker I never remain idle, and have been filming this whole process from the beginning almost three years ago - it has been therapy for both Karen and myself, because after all, if cameras are rolling, it can't be really serious, it's just a movie, right?  I hadn't planned on doing anything with the footage, until a few weeks ago, Karen reached out to her old friend, Elliot Mintz. Elliot is considered a media guru who has offered advice to dozens of famous clients over the years including Karen. They spoke by phone about ways Karen could share her experience with others, in her own words, in her own way. I spoke with him about the many hours of film I had shot and within days, Elliot presented some ideas for us to consider.

Karen & Elliot screen grab
On June 21st, Karen put on her make-up and her hair (chemo is not kind on hair) and had a heart to hear - a bedside talk with Elliot. They spoke for almost two hours. With my daughter shooting second camera in the tiny room, I filmed the deeply moving and candid conversation. Karen of course is very enthusiastic about finding the right platform for some kind of presentation. 'You can take the girl outta showbiz.....' so, we will see. It's still a little raw for me, I'm not sure. It would be an interesting and moving journey to share with a truly unique and original spirit. We are both grateful to Elliot for his support and guidance (He is representing us pro bono).
So, that's where things are as we begin August. I wish I had better news to report. But cancer seldom allows for that. Karen and I have received hundreds of messages from you. Your prayers and well wishes help sustain us. We remain eternally grateful for all the love you continue to share.

  1. Please accept my love and heap it on the 'love pile' with the rest.

I also wish to offer my thanks to Karen and the family for the willingness (and the ferocious courage therein) to share this experience with the rest of us.

  22. I've written a short note before, but I'm just so deeply moved by Karen's story I have to write again. Please pass on to her that a record producer in Nashville is praying for her right now. Of course asking for healing and the extraordinary but also asking for the peace that surpasses all expectations. Today I have the number one record in America with a group I produce, The Civil Wars. And in some small way it is because of the inspiration I drew from writers, musicians and actors like Karen. I grew up on Karen's films - had the crush - all of it. She was always unique and inspiring and she was doing it - show biz! Clearly don't know you two, but glad to drop a note to say be well, and know that you're remembered.

  29. You talk about Karen's spirit and how she is keeping her spirit up despite all that she is going through. How the reports say one thing but Karen is living proof of another. This reminds me of the book/movie The Secret. That if you think more positively you invite positive energy into your life etc. There was a cancer survivor actually on the movie version who really touched me when I watched it. My Mom passed of breast cancer when I was 10. She was only 39 years old. Now that I am 32 years of age I realize really how scary it must have been to be diagnosed at the age of 35 and the fight she went through. I just want you guys to know that you might not know me and I might just be another fan but you are in my thoughts and prayers. I do read every update you post. God bless you both!

  48. I wish Karen makes a full recovery, because miracles are real, they do happen. Until then, I want to recommend something my mom takes which helps with her health, it's called Vibrant Health Green drink. It's got all those green veggies that fight cancer and build up the immune system. Also, consider looking into Zeolite, which helps combat the chemo side-effects, and consider also the Astragulus herb, which has anti-cancer chemicals. If she's dealing with an infection, she should also consider Colloidal Silver, which can sometimes help make some anti-biotics work better. I'm not sure what herbs she is taking, so these are merely suggestions.

Again I'm wishing and praying for Karen to get better. She was in some of my all time favorite films from the 1970s.

  82. My Dad had lung cancer. He had radiotherapy but decided it wasn't for him. He just wanted to live as much of his life as he could without feeling like crap.

My friend had Prostate cancer and he too snubbed radiotherapy, etc. and in fact wanted nothing to do with the hospital treatments other than going there for regular check-ups/tests. He instead chose the alternative treatments/medicines route and found that it prolonged his life, made him feel a little better and his cancer actually slowed down. It eventually started shrinking too! Alas, the alternative herbal medicines he had been importing were costing him £300 per month and he reached a point where he could no longer afford them (and no health authority would ever fund it obviously). Within a couple of months of stopping buying that stuff, his cancer returned with a vengeance. He deteriorated, was put on steroids, pain medication and other drugs by the hospital (which he had no choice in using by that point) and a few months after that he lost the battle that he had been s valiantly winning.

My point being, please keep doing what you are doing. Alternative means are always advantageous and combined with your love and support and the lovely lady's own spirit, I am sure you are doing the right thing. =)

Much love and wishes to you both.

Keep smiling, keep laughing and keep remembering how many people out there care that you may not be aware of!

  99. Wishing her the best possible outcome, tempered with the realism that cancer is not a friend. BUT Karen's upbeat spirit may be just the thing to create a happy ending. You are all very brave and courageous to make this fight so public. I trust others will learn from it and I know I speak for many when I wish you all the very best.

  101. Forward my best wishes to Ms. Black. I know the burden of health problems, but nothing to that extent. I definitely identify with the frustration of suddenly losing your mobility and becoming bedridden. I've lived with that for more than five years, but thankfully I haven't had to face the other problems that Ms. Black faces. I wish her and her family the best and will think of her often.

If you don't know the Lord yet, please reach out to Him and have him hold a mansion for you in Heaven. He's real, He loves all of you and He is reaching out to all of us who haven't taken that step yet of accepting Him. It's just that easy. I'll leave you with that and saying God bless you both and your daughter.

  142. Stephen,
Just read your blog on your wife's status which was shared by my friend and former teacher Rob Reece.

I am a breast cancer survivor and when it hurts to hear that another wonderful person has this disease.

Even though I do not personally know your wife Karen, I have enjoyed her performances. In interviews, I believed she was being herself.

I will keep your family in my prayers. Perhaps, a miracle will happen soon.

    Take care,

    Nancy Guzan

  143. Rob Reece, my friend and former teacher shared this sad news. I did not know that your wife, Karen Black had cancer. She is a wonderful actress. When I have seen her in interviews, I liked her because I believed she was being herself. As a cancer survivor, it hurts to see another person suffering from this disease. She sure has a positive attitude and that is a big part of the battle. I will keep Karen and your family in my prayers. And believe that a miracle could happen.

I'm shattered. She illuminated the screen and took the eyes and heart hostage from the moment she appeared. From my youth in the sixties, I've looked forward to seeing her name in a film, because I knew I was about to be swept up and taken to new places. Her ability to define and inhabit a character was second to none. Five Easy Pieces --- you didn't know whether to laugh or cry, so you did both. She so stole that movie. Adorable and gorgeous, sexy and tragic and so so human in the deepest, finest sense of the word. Oh Karen, you can't leave us. I'd give every cent I have....

You'll keep them hopping up there in Heaven Please give Joan Hackett and Steve McQueen, and Bruce Lee big hugs from me. I hope you all are having a ball. I'll be seeing you! Love Sharon Farrell

  148. I'm so glad you treated the whole experience as a movie and we will be able to share last moments with her and learn from her. She was so smart in so many ways. I remember when we both had little babies and she was telling me she really didn't believe that they needed so much protein. More veggies and fruits. Maybe hard core beef and chicken and PROTEIN only a couple times a week And I was thinking that protein was the most important every day. She was a great Mom and that's all we talked about, our kids and what was best to feed them.

My deepest condolences to you and your family.
